Paul carries the idea of setting our mind on things above and not on things on the earth to this passage and calls us to put to death the things of this earth.  These are described as actions - the things we used to do.  Paul essentially gives a variety of two specific issues: immorality (sexual sin) and anger (mistreating others).  These are both characteristic of old man habits and things of this earth. As followers focused on Jesus, we must constantly be laying aside old, natural habits and be transformed into his image!

Paul writes to the church of Colossae to bolster their understanding and confidence in the supreme position, glory and sufficiency of Jesus for their daily lives and interactions as a church.  Paul addresses the Colossians heresy that is plaguing this body of believers, but does so primarily through his instruction about Jesus and the impact that Jesus should have in the lives of true believers.  The preeminence of Christ is on display throughout this letter to the Colossians believers.
