The message of the gospel is good news, but not just because it offers rescue from the consequences of our sin!  It is good news because we have been rescued from sin to a relationship with God through Jesus!  You and I cannot accept the benefits of salvation without understanding the importance of growing in our relationship with Jesus.  Often, if we are not careful we try to add Jesus to our lives instead of making Jesus our life!  This is what Paul is calling these believers in Colossae to understand - they need Jesus! Paul longs to present them to Jesus as mature in their faith! Are you maturing in your faith?  Are you growing in your relationship with Christ?  This is the ultimate purpose of the good news - complete life transformation! 

Paul writes to the church of Colossae to bolster their understanding and confidence in the supreme position, glory and sufficiency of Jesus for their daily lives and interactions as a church.  Paul addresses the Colossians heresy that is plaguing this body of believers, but does so primarily through his instruction about Jesus and the impact that Jesus should have in the lives of true believers.  The preeminence of Christ is on display throughout this letter to the Colossians believers.
