As Paul continues to explain the implications of living as one that has been declared righteous by God through faith in Jesus, he explains the freedom that we enjoy from sin. Sin is no longer the master of our lives. Being free from sin, does not however mean that we can live in a haphazard way. Instead, Paul charges believers to live rightly toward God. God is now our master and we must live appropriately in our actions and reactions toward him and others. Because of your freedom from sin, you can and must live righteously for God. 

Throughout Romans, Paul offers a defense of what he believes and teachers about the gospel for these believers in Rome he has not yet met. Some of them may have been questioning him, his message and how it relates to Judaism. Paul writes to explain at length the connection of Jesus, the gospel and defend it, in spite of the rejection of Jesus as the Jewish Messiah by many Jews.
