As Paul continues to develop his argument here in Romans, he is going to address a potential misconception - if increased sin yields increased grace, should we sin more to receive more grace? Paul addresses this throughout Romans 6:1-14 explaining that sin should no longer be in control for followers of Jesus. Sin is no longer in charge, it no longer reigns and because of that, of course, we wouldn't yield to or give into our sin. By God's grace, we can yield our members as instruments to righteousness rather than sin. We must remember that our union with Christ stops the reign of sin & provides us power to resist sinning.

Throughout Romans, Paul offers a defense of what he believes and teachers about the gospel for these believers in Rome he has not yet met. Some of them may have been questioning him, his message and how it relates to Judaism. Paul writes to explain at length the connection of Jesus, the gospel and defend it, in spite of the rejection of Jesus as the Jewish Messiah by many Jews.
