As Paul continues to develop his argument about our freedom from sin, Paul turns to address the the impact that sin has had on the law. Paul wants to clearly identify that even the law has been perverted by sin. First, Paul wants us to understand that the law is not sin (7), but the law reveals and defines sin (7-8). Despite the perversion of sin, believers are free from sin and through grace we can yield to God. 

Throughout Romans, Paul offers a defense of what he believes and teachers about the gospel for these believers in Rome he has not yet met. Some of them may have been questioning him, his message and how it relates to Judaism. Paul writes to explain at length the connection of Jesus, the gospel and defend it, in spite of the rejection of Jesus as the Jewish Messiah by many Jews.
