Things to Come

April 21, 2024 Speaker: pastor dave Series: Daniel - God's Sovereign Kingdom Advance

Topic: Prophecy, Daniel, 1-PM Sermons Passage: Daniel 11:2– 12:13

In the final two chapters of Daniel, he is given the events of things to come for his people. Events included in both the Persian (v. 2) and Greecian Empires (v. 3-35). The prophecy then moves ahead to future events (11:36-12:3). Daniel struggles with understanding. As he struggles, Daniel is encouraged to wait on God and trust in him, as all of these things will come at the right time. Daniel is also encouraged to endure with the confidence that in the end, all of it will truly be worthwhile. As believers, we too can and must endure. In this life there are so many circumstances that seem overwhelming and frustrating and yet, we can endure and we must the only one who can and will make all things right and all things new one day. Grace is offered as the prophecy of Daniel concludes, and that grace is for us as much as it was for Daniel.

Daniel records events of the captivity of Judah (the two southern tribes combined following the civil war of Israel and the division of the twelve tribes). Daniel appropriately presents the sovereign work of God even in these foreign lands and over these foreign governments. Kings and kingdoms are subject to God, even when while they may not fully realize it. Through the narrative section (Chs. 1-6), Daniel demonstrates the sovereign hand of God at work presently among humanity. In the final prophetic section (Chs. 7-12), Daniel demonstrates the sovereign hand of God at work to build his kingdom in the future.
