Confession and Petition

March 31, 2024 Speaker: pastor dave Series: Daniel - God's Sovereign Kingdom Advance

Topic: Praying, Prayer that Exalts God, Confession, Daniel, 1-PM Sermons Passage: Daniel 9:1-19

As the third prophetic vision of Daniel begins, the confessional petition of Daniel for his people precedes the vision. This prayer magnificently demonstrates the biblical approach to God in prayer. Daniel acknowledges the name and character of God throughout the prayer. He references the truth of God as it is revealed to his people and recorded for them in Scripture. He also contrasts the glory of God with the frailty and fallenness of humanity, specifically Israel. As the prayer concludes, Daniel boldly makes his request to God. His demands are clearly visible in the words he uses throughout (vs. 17-19), hear, listen, open, hear, forgive, listen, act, and do not delay. These requests come from Daniel on the basis of God’s name; “for the Lord’s sake,” “that bears your name,” “for your own sake,” and “your city and your people bear your name.” Daniel was passionate about exalting the name of God, which he uses 31 times in vs. 1-20 (Yahweh – 8x, Elohim – 13x, Adonai – 10x). Daniel demonstrates that you must come humbly to God, but you can come boldly through Jesus.

Daniel records events of the captivity of Judah (the two southern tribes combined following the civil war of Israel and the division of the twelve tribes). Daniel appropriately presents the sovereign work of God even in these foreign lands and over these foreign governments. Kings and kingdoms are subject to God, even when while they may not fully realize it. Through the narrative section (Chs. 1-6), Daniel demonstrates the sovereign hand of God at work presently among humanity. In the final prophetic section (Chs. 7-12), Daniel demonstrates the sovereign hand of God at work to build his kingdom in the future.
