The resurrection of Jesus is a foundational element of the gospel of Jesus as Paul explains it throughout Romans. This begins immediately in the introduction of this letter (Romans 1:3-4). The resurrection of Jesus vindicates everything that Jesus claimed to be and he is vindicated by God, in the resurrection. His resurrection also guarantees everything that God has promised to you. You will be raised one day because Jesus was raised, your loved ones who have died – believing in Jesus alone for their salvation – will be raised. Paul masterfully connects the Son of God to the man Jesus, the Messiah our Lord and Savior. The implications of these truths are enormous for those of us who claim to know Jesus and walk with him. Because of the resurrection, you are declared righteous by faith in Jesus, you are free from the power of sin, you can produce the fruits of the Spirit, and death is defeated – it has no lasting power over you. Your faith in the resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of a genuine relationship with him.

Throughout Romans, Paul offers a defense of what he believes and teachers about the gospel for these believers in Rome he has not yet met. Some of them may have been questioning him, his message and how it relates to Judaism. Paul writes to explain at length the connection of Jesus, the gospel and defend it, in spite of the rejection of Jesus as the Jewish Messiah by many Jews.
