As Paul continues to explain the truth of the gospel and the truth of being declared righteous apart from any work or personal merit, he turns to the life of Abraham as the perfect illustration. Paul addresses misconceptions about Abraham and asserts that he is the father of all who believe in Jesus. This discussion about being declared righteous comes back to faith. You can only be declared righteous through faith in Jesus and this is Paul's point throughout all of chapter 4. Jesus is our only hope and we must rest in him alone, by faith, for salvation from sin.
Throughout Romans, Paul offers a defense of what he believes and teachers about the gospel for these believers in Rome he has not yet met. Some of them may have been questioning him, his message and how it relates to Judaism. Paul writes to explain at length the connection of Jesus, the gospel and defend it, in spite of the rejection of Jesus as the Jewish Messiah by many Jews.
