As the book of Daniel continues in the narrative accounts, we're given the account of Belshazzar and God writing on the wall. It begins with Belshazzar taking the vessels from the Jewish temple and worshipping his gods, while drinking out of them. Then a human hand appears and begins writing on the wall. Belshazzar is overwhelming with terror, but his mother comes in to the feast and tells him to call for Daniel. Daniel is brought in to interpret the writing. Daniel first reminds him of the humiliation of Nebuchadnezzar and his humble response to the work of God in his life. Essentially, Daniel informs Belshazzar that because of his pride and refusal to humble himself God has judged against him and taken the kingdom from him. Ultimately, as Daniel 5 demonstrates, God will judge all who refuse to repent and trust in Jesus. As believers, though we sin, we have an advocate, Jesus, through whom we can gain forgiveness and grace to live for God, rather than living in pride and opposing him.

Daniel records events of the captivity of Judah (the two southern tribes combined following the civil war of Israel and the division of the twelve tribes). Daniel appropriately presents the sovereign work of God even in these foreign lands and over these foreign governments. Kings and kingdoms are subject to God, even when while they may not fully realize it. Through the narrative section (Chs. 1-6), Daniel demonstrates the sovereign hand of God at work presently among humanity. In the final prophetic section (Chs. 7-12), Daniel demonstrates the sovereign hand of God at work to build his kingdom in the future.
