Justice for All

Topic: Justice of God, Law, Romans, 1-AM Sermons Passage: Romans 2:12-29

As Paul continues to build his case of the sinfulness of even the Jews, he uses the judgment of God, the obedience of the law and the danger of hypocrisy. Paul brings Jews to the same sins as the Gentiles, through his hypothetical questions. He challenges them about not knowing God as much as they perceive they do. He challenges them of being enamored with possessions (stealing). He challenges them about immorality (adultery). Finally, he challenges them about their own idolatry - evidenced by "robbing temples." In each case, Paul is challenging their perception that because they are direct recipients of God's law and they enjoy the covenant symbol of circumcision that they are in a better position than the Gentiles. Paul's point is twofold: first, all are sinners before God and second, all will be justly judged before God based on his communication to mankind. God is an impartial judge. We must remember that on judgment day, your heritage, your religion, your good works will not stand before God; only response to his Word will matter. God has spoken and Jesus is the means through which we can be reconciled to God.

Throughout Romans, Paul offers a defense of what he believes and teachers about the gospel for these believers in Rome he has not yet met. Some of them may have been questioning him, his message and how it relates to Judaism. Paul writes to explain at length the connection of Jesus, the gospel and defend it, in spite of the rejection of Jesus as the Jewish Messiah by many Jews.
