As Paul begins his explanation and defense of the gospel, he begins with the problem of every single human being that has ever lived - sin. Sin prevents us from acknowledging God as we ought to and from giving him the thanks he is due. Sin clouds our ability to clearly see what matters and why it matters. Sin brings the wrath of God on humanity; however, there is hope, through Jesus, you can be rescued from your sin. This is what makes the gospel such good news. Though you are a sinner, you have and do sin, our hope is found in Jesus - who never sinned and died in our place, taking our sin on him. Have you been freed from your sin? You can be.

Throughout Romans, Paul offers a defense of what he believes and teachers about the gospel for these believers in Rome he has not yet met. Some of them may have been questioning him, his message and how it relates to Judaism. Paul writes to explain at length the connection of Jesus, the gospel and defend it, in spite of the rejection of Jesus as the Jewish Messiah by many Jews.
