Topic: Trust, Sovereign, Daniel, 1-PM Sermons Passage: Daniel 1:1-21

As Daniel begins, we have the account of Daniel and his three companions being carried away into Babylon. The intention of the king of Babylon is to reorient and adjust their identity to be Babylonian rather than that of their native land. He seeks to accomplish this by reeducation these intelligent young men, he also provides them different food and by changing their names to identify them with the gods and culture of Babylon. However, Daniel and his three friends seek to honor their heritage and more importantly to honor God, even in a foreign land under the captivity of a foreign government and king. God gives them favor and allows them to honor him, even in captivity. God demonstrates throughout his power and ability to rule, even over the reigning human governments.

Daniel records events of the captivity of Judah (the two southern tribes combined following the civil war of Israel and the division of the twelve tribes). Daniel appropriately presents the sovereign work of God even in these foreign lands and over these foreign governments. Kings and kingdoms are subject to God, even when while they may not fully realize it. Through the narrative section (Chs. 1-6), Daniel demonstrates the sovereign hand of God at work presently among humanity. In the final prophetic section (Chs. 7-12), Daniel demonstrates the sovereign hand of God at work to build his kingdom in the future.
