In his article, A Christian Perspective on Wine-Drinking, Norman Geisler states "America is an alcoholic culture." (BibSac, 139 no 553 Jan - Mar 1982, 54.) That article was written in 1982 and the statement is far more accurate today than it was then! Americans and even evangelical Christians are enamored with alcohol in a variety of forms and though the Bible does not ever forbid it directly, there certainly seems to be appropriate warnings to cause us to examine the necessity of drinking alcohol today. Sufficient evidence exists that alcohol in its currently constituting form is not the the wine of the Old or New Testaments, the process of distillation was not invented until the Middle Ages.  The capacity today to infuse a beverage with a larger alcoholic content than can be reached naturally changes the conversation a bit. 

As believers there are several realities that should inform our decisions about drinking or not drinking alcoholic beverages: 1) Does it glorify our great God and our Savior, Jesus Christ? 2) Is is even the same as it was in Bible times? 3) Could it cause a fellow-believers to stumble? 4) Could it cause you personally to be out of control? 5) the fact that it is not specifically forbidden does not mean its allowable - everything is lawful, but not necessarily beneficial (1 Corinthians 6:12).  By God's grace, we must chose to live our lives for him, not for our own pleasure and fulfillment.  We belong to him, he has purchased us with a price - his own precious blood!  Let's live to exact him and his greatness in all we do!
