Paul here offers encouragement about the coming judgment of God on all who are causing suffering for the believers in Thessalonica.  Paul assures them that God will repay their affliction with his righteous judgment, afflicting those with eternal destruction who have persecuted them.  God will also reward his own and accept them to dwell with him, in his presence for all eternity!  What a joy for us as believers to look forward to the day we will be with Jesus!  

Throughout the letters to the Thessalonians, Paul writes to encourage these believers through his pastoral words of comfort, instruction and exhortation.  He writes of his relationship and love for the church; he encourages them to grow in their faith, to increase in their love for God and one another and to hope in the God who controls not just their future but their present circumstances.
