As we work our way through this first letter to the Thessalonians, it is important for us to define our terms as we did last week in explaining the Will of God. It is also imperative for us to understand the meaning and function of this doctrine of Sanctification. Paul addresses it many times throughout his writings and it is translated as both holiness and sanctification. So what is the Bible describing when it uses the term Sanctification? Sanctification is your progressive growth in holiness (being set apart to Jesus); progressive sanctification is essential for every true believer!
Throughout the letters to the Thessalonians, Paul writes to encourage these believers through his pastoral words of comfort, instruction and exhortation. He writes of his relationship and love for the church; he encourages them to grow in their faith, to increase in their love for God and one another and to hope in the God who controls not just their future but their present circumstances.
