The Look of Faith

Peter was writing to members of the church that had been scattered.  Does that feel anything like being quarantined?  In 2 Peter 1:5-8, he says make every effort to supplement your faith with goodness, goodness with knowledge, knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with godliness, godliness with brotherly-affection and brotherly-affection with love!  Even though we can't go to people's houses we can still reach out to them by writing, texting, and calling!  God wants us to reach out to the people who are lonely!                     - Jude

Often times, when we look at this passage, we imagine that Peter is stacking these 2-peter-12virtues one right on top of the other.  I've often wondered, how can we even remember the first characteristic by the time you get around to growing into the last one?  Because of the way these verses are constructed, it seems as if Peter is building a tower or pyramid that we must try to duplicate as believers.  Often our impression of this passage is that Christian growth looks like this:

However, it is seems more appropriate for us to understand this passage more as flower with many petals all containing these various characteristics that are always together interacting with one another.

May God give us grace during these days to grow in these vital characteristics of true believers!
