As Paul finishes his confrontation of Peter here in Galatians 2, he wants to make clear the following points: Paul acknowledges the normal mindset of Jews toward Gentile "sinners," he then points to the common ground held by both sides - justification if by faith alone and not by any works of the law. Paul then offers two conditional statements that address the issues of sin related to the law. Paul moves from this to union with Christ and its implications for both the law and living life in Christ. Paul concludes with two potential results if we fail to understand and respond accordingly. This section is complex, but essential for a better understanding of what the gospel entails and how it applies to our daily lives and our living. The Gospel is not about your merit, but believing, which leads to transformation.

The major theme of Galatians is the gospel – the message of salvation! What is it? Who is right about the means of salvation? In order to fully address this vital issue, Paul is going to address the subjects of Jesus, the Holy Spirit, faith, justification, freedom, the law and the implications of these in our daily living. Galatians is not a book offering believers the ultimate license to live however they please. Galatians is instead an explanation of all that we possess through the glorious gospel of Jesus and the implications of it for our daily lives. The gospel is given and intended to change us, to shape us more into the image of Jesus. By God’s grace, we can understand the truth of the gospel and be transformed by it.
