As Peter continues to offer hope to these believers, who have been scattered because of persecution and are facing the opposition of skeptics and false teachers, he reminds them about the character of God and his return. First, Peter reminds them that God is not bound by time, as human beings are - God is eternal and infinite, he has no beginning and no ending and therefore, time is not the same to him as it may be to us. But God is also merciful and a seeming delay in his return demonstrates his mercy, not any lack of ability to fulfill his promises. The certainty of judgment that will accompany the Great Day of the Lord must be realized. God is delaying to give mankind an opportunity to respond to the gracious gift of the gospel. In anticipation, believers must live daily in a holy manner that leads to greater godliness. For these believers and for us today, there is great hope - Jesus is coming again! Are you ready for his return?

In his letter, most likely to the same group to which he wrote 1 Peter, Peter encourages believers to continue to grow in their understanding of their faith and to live it out daily. The grace of God available through Jesus truly transforms and empowers believers to live rightly, even when facing opposition.
