Peter continues his description of false teachers, warning about their character and their teaching. Ultimately, these false teachers will the demise they deny - the return of Jesus and the judgment of all, including those who deny his existence and return. Peter describes their character as as arrogant, lustful and greedy. He describes their teaching as empty because it fails to offer real hope and the possibility of real change. They themselves are truly controlled by their own sin - real freedom is found through Jesus alone. Peter finishes with the sobering reality of their coming ruin. Peter offers two proverbial examples of these false teachers, they are like dogs that return over and over again to their own vomit and they are like pigs that can be bathed, but their hearts are set on their own wicked, filthy desires.

Peter offers these warnings because of the presence of false teachers in the church. Each believer must carefully examine themselves and make sure they don't fit these traits. Believers must be discerning and aware of those who display these kinds of characteristics.

In his letter, most likely to the same group to which he wrote 1 Peter, Peter encourages believers to continue to grow in their understanding of their faith and to live it out daily. The grace of God available through Jesus truly transforms and empowers believers to live rightly, even when facing opposition.
