In one of the more familiar passages in Hebrews, the preacher challenges his hearers to respond appropriately to the discipline/training of the Lord.  What is this training?  How does this training work? Does the preacher offer up just a general statement about the believer's response to all suffering or all the evil that exists in the world?

As is always the case, the context of this challenge is so important.  The preacher wants these believers to allow their thinking about persecution to be right. He calls them to accept it as the discipline of the Lord and to endure - just like Jesus did. By God's grace, we can be trained by the discipline of the Lord.

Though the author of Hebrews is unknown, the writer offers instruction about Jesus; his person, his work and truth that he is better than angels, Moses, priests and any feature of the old covenant. Jesus is Supreme and Sufficient for believers! Our salvation is secured through his sacrificial work for us. As followers, we can rest in the provision of Jesus for us and we must persevere and encourage others to remain faithful to him.
