James continues his discussion of pride, and moves to the abuses of the wicked rich against the believers who are poor. James pronounces the judgment of God on them, though likely, they are not even hearing or receiving this message. It instead functions as a source of encouragement and hope for the oppressed believers that are being persecuted and taken advantage of. James point throughout has been the response of genuine faith and once again identifies how genuine faith responds even to oppression and persecution. Genuine faith does not trust in riches or wealth, but instead trusts our all-powerful Lord who will judge all!
James, the brother of Jesus, writes to Jewish believers who have been scattered, likely because of persecution. James encourages these believers through instruction on trials, genuine faith, and the appropriate interactions within the community of believers. His goal is to give guidance to these believers as they continue to engage with one another apart from the oversight of the established church in Jerusalem.
