The real demonstration of faith comes as we love one another, just as James states earlier in Chapter 2:8, the royal law - the law of God's kingdom and his people is to Love one another as much as we love ourselves!  This is demonstrated as we loving help, serve and engage one another in the church. The truth James longs for believers to understand and live is: genuine, saving faith naturally produces actions toward others that demonstrate transformation! 

James, the brother of Jesus, writes to Jewish believers who have been scattered, likely because of persecution. James encourages these believers through instruction on trials, genuine faith, and the appropriate interactions within the community of believers. His goal is to give guidance to these believers as they continue to engage with one another apart from the oversight of the established church in Jerusalem.
