A Surprising Proposal

Topic: Faithfulness of God, Selfless Love, Kindness, Ruth, 1-PM Sermons Passage: Ruth 3:1–18

In the 3rd Act of this great drama, Naomi sends Ruth to the threshing floor to let Boaz know she is more than willing to accept her role in the family.  She is willing to take him as her husband in order to protect and secure the family line for Naomi, Elimelech and her husband. She proposes to Boaz when he finds here there at the threshing floor, sleeping at his feet.  Ruth asks Boaz to take her under his wing and in essence this is a proposal of marriage. Boaz agrees to take care of the details.  Throughout this short account, we see repeatedly the loving-loyalty of Ruth toward Naomi. God calls us as believers to selflessly love others.  Ruth exemplifies the kind of sacrifice we ought to be willing to show, to give to one another.

The book of Ruth recounts the faithfulness of God in a time of incredible unfaithfulness to God. The people of God were defined by their sinfulness in the concluding statement of the book of Judges, In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did whatever seemed right to him. It is during this time, that the lives of Naomi, Ruth and Boaz are lived out. Despite the wickedness of the day, God is faithful and still at work to fulfill his promises to his people.  God uses a foreign woman, a depressed and bitter widow and an average man to add names to the promise of a coming Messiah, a redeemer. Both Matthew and Luke reference Boaz and Ruth in the genealogical line of Jesus. In our darkest hour, we can still trust that our great and gracious God is at work and he will absolutely accomplish his purpose and fulfill his word to his people.
