A Ray of Hope!

Topic: Providence of God, Protection, Ruth, 1-PM Sermons Passage: Ruth 2:1–23

The drama of Ruth and Naomi continues as they need food and Ruth goes out to gather in a field near Bethlehem. She just so happens to come to the field of Boaz, as Naomi informs her, Boaz is one of their kinsman redeemers. Boaz shows great kindness to her and she responds with great faithfulness and respect for Boaz. At the conclusion of this 2nd Act, Naomi begins to see the possibility of a match and this will continue to develop in the 3rd Act.  Despite the horrific and tragic loss of her husband and two sons, Naomi is beginning to see the providential hand of God at work in her life and in the lives of her family members.  God is faithful and God is in control, he will fail his own!

The book of Ruth recounts the faithfulness of God in a time of incredible unfaithfulness to God. The people of God were defined by their sinfulness in the concluding statement of the book of Judges, In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did whatever seemed right to him. It is during this time, that the lives of Naomi, Ruth and Boaz are lived out. Despite the wickedness of the day, God is faithful and still at work to fulfill his promises to his people.  God uses a foreign woman, a depressed and bitter widow and an average man to add names to the promise of a coming Messiah, a redeemer. Both Matthew and Luke reference Boaz and Ruth in the genealogical line of Jesus. In our darkest hour, we can still trust that our great and gracious God is at work and he will absolutely accomplish his purpose and fulfill his word to his people.
