Paul continues his instruction to the church at Corinth on the issue of tongues and prophecy and both their relevance and use in the church.  He lays out the purpose for the gift of tongues in this section, which is an important understanding as we approach our understanding of this gift.

As Paul writes to the church of Corinth, he is challenging the Corinthians to remember the ownership of the Lord Jesus in their lives and to live accordingly.  He calls them to grow up in their understanding of the gospel by maturing in their unity with one another and their own personal purity that must define genuine believers.
