Jesus addresses the doubters and those questioning His statement that He is the Son of God in vs. 17.  John clarifies in vs. 18, the people understood that Jesus' statement was a claim to be equal with God. For this claim, they wanted to kill Jesus!  However, Jesus claim is reality and He speaks to the unity He enjoys with the Father.

Throughout the Gospel of John we see the truth that Jesus is the promised one, the anointed one from God through his signs, witnesses, and statements; and he has come to rescue humanity from sin!
