Unity in Ephesians

Introduction to Ephesians

The book of Ephesians is an incredible letter of instruction for believers to help them fully comprehend all that they now possess because of the work of Christ on their behalf.  Ephesians addresses important issues of theology such as the Trinity, the Church, the realities of our salvation and the necessity of practical responses to these truths.

Ultimately, Paul is writing to help believers understand that because of the work of Christ they have been reconciled to God.  Because of their new position in Christ, they should be reconciled to one another both in the church, in their homes, in their places of work and in their communities.  Unity is one of Paul’s themes throughout the book and addresses one of the most important evidences that we have been reconciled to God – reconciled relationships, unity with others.

You can do your best to convince yourself that you have been reconciled to God; however, you evidence that reality when you live out that reconciled position with others!  Paul encourages Jews and Gentiles to be reconciled to one another and remember that Jesus has removed the division that exists between them (2:14-16).  Nationalistic conflict may be one of the greatest barriers to overcome with another human being; yet Paul calls believers to lay it aside and remember that Jesus has made the two people groups one through Christ.  As believers, we are one with other believers that we may never otherwise have associated with but we do now because of our common bond in Christ.  As Paul turns to the practical application in this letter (4:1-3), he begins with this statement: please walk (live) in a manner worthy of your calling – make every effort to keep the unity among believers because of the bond you possess through Jesus!

May God give us grace to live in light of this reality: Unity is not an option because it is that most clearly demonstrates that you are reconciled to God in Christ!
