Despite the rejection of the call of God to go to Nineveh, Jonah is rescued by the great fish. Often the great fish can be perceived as a punishment, but truly the fish is the means of God's mercy to Jonah. Jonah calls out to God from the belly of the fish and offers thanks for his rescue, in Jonah's mind, from certain death. There was no hope and no way out, but God made a way, supernaturally to rescue Jonah. God mercifully rescued Jonah and offers his merciful rescue to us through Jesus! For us today, the rich display of God's mercy comes through Jesus alone. You can receive this mercy if you will turn in faith to Jesus. If you are a follower of Jesus, are you living in light of his rich mercy to you?  You can, but only by his grace!

The prophecy of Jonah has characteristically been viewed through the lens of the great fish that swallows Jonah, but Jonah is about much more than the spectacular events that characterize the book.  Jonah is a book that vividly demonstrates the mercy of God to Jonah, to terrified sailors, and to the foreign Ninevites. Jonah is called to go and preach to Nineveh, but he refuses the message of God and instead flees. Throughout this brief book, Yahweh will pursue Jonah and demonstrate to him repeatedly his rich mercy that is available to Jonah, the sailors, to Nineveh and the Ninevites. The mercy of God is available to you as well, today that mercy comes through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross for your sins. Through this rich mercy, you too can have a relationship with God.
