Jude writes to Jewish believers encouraging them to contend for the faith.  He wants them to stand against those who would deny Jesus, those who are ungodly and self-indulgent. Several of the applications Jude offers throughout his letter can and must be applied to the manner in which we engage one another in the church.  Often, if we are not careful we can be contentious - which interestingly enough is often ungodly and self-indulgent. Contending for the faith is not seeking to pick a fight, it is simply honoring the fundamental truths set forth in the Word of God. By God's grace, we can compassionately contend for the faith and demonstrate the kindness of our Savior as he engaged those around him.
