Thanks-giving and thankfulness should uniquely characterize believers. The Old Testament offers a foundation for offering thanks to God. Offering praise, confessing the goodness of God can and should characterize the people of God. Even in the sacrificial system, one of the fellowship sacrifices was called the thank offering (Lev. 7:12-13,15). This offering was part of the fellowship sacrifices to God. Even in the Old Testament, thanks was supposed to characterize the people of God.
In the New Testament, Jesus is an example of this kind of thanks-giving to God as he offers thanks before the feeding of the 5000 and the raising of Lazarus from the dead. Paul also serves as an example by regularly offering thanks for the believers in the churches to whom he writes. Heaven offers an example of offering thanks (Rev. 4:9, 7:12). Paul reminds us that thanks-giving and thankfulness are the will of God for us 1 Thess. 5:18, Eph. 5:20). Our prayers are to be offered with thanksgiving (Phil. 4:6). Thanksgiving should characterize our lives as believers. (Col. 2:7, 4:2).
