As Paul continues to develop the idea of a transformed life, he addresses the way believers engage one another. He begins by calling believers to love one another. He then addresses 12 more specific responses that ought to characterize believers, that ought to be visible traits in our lives. These characteristics include: hating evil, clinging to good, devoted to one another, counting one another more important than yourself, diligent, empowered, serving, rejoicing, enduring, praying, giving to others, and hospitable. This list is not intended as a to-do list as much as it is intended to be evident traits in the lives of transformed believers. Paul calls us to sincerely love one another in your tangible responses to each other. By God's grace, we can.
Throughout Romans, Paul offers a defense of what he believes and teachers about the gospel for these believers in Rome he has not yet met. Some of them may have been questioning him, his message and how it relates to Judaism. Paul writes to explain at length the connection of Jesus, the gospel and defend it, in spite of the rejection of Jesus as the Jewish Messiah by many Jews.
