As Paul continues to explain the way believers are to be transformed, he addresses the importance again of our thinking. Right thinking about ourselves must be the foundation of the way we use our gifts to serve one another. Individual members are the components of the body as a whole. The Spirit supplies gifts to serve individual members. The gifts are not for making the church program function; gifts are for intentionally the purpose of serving one another. You, as an individual believer, must think accurately about yourself and lovingly serve one another with your gifts. 

Throughout Romans, Paul offers a defense of what he believes and teachers about the gospel for these believers in Rome he has not yet met. Some of them may have been questioning him, his message and how it relates to Judaism. Paul writes to explain at length the connection of Jesus, the gospel and defend it, in spite of the rejection of Jesus as the Jewish Messiah by many Jews.
