As Paul continues his discussion on sufferings in this life and the ministry of the Holy Spirit, he explains that the Spirit comes alongside believers in their weaknesses. The foundation for our confidence is based on our calling and the transforming work of God in our lives. God is actively shaping us into the image of Jesus, through the ministry of the Spirit and this is his design from the beginning for all who respond to his calling. As a follower of Jesus, you must rest fully in the presence and plan of God for you. We need grace to do it. 

Throughout Romans, Paul offers a defense of what he believes and teachers about the gospel for these believers in Rome he has not yet met. Some of them may have been questioning him, his message and how it relates to Judaism. Paul writes to explain at length the connection of Jesus, the gospel and defend it, in spite of the rejection of Jesus as the Jewish Messiah by many Jews.
