Here, as Paul begins Romans 8, he addresses again our position and the implications of being declared righteous. He explains that through the Holy Spirit, we have power to resist sin. The Spirit dwelling in us is powerful enough to enable us not to give in to the power of sin that dwells in our natural, mortal bodies. Paul addresses the difference between a Spirit mindset and a flesh mindset, remembering that flesh is describing the physical aspect of our human existence. Paul's point throughout is that in Jesus, you are not condemned, but empowered, by the Spirit, to live for God as his children. The assurances offered by Paul are a wonderful reminder of a position as children of God, and as heirs. Our standing before God must impact our daily living by the power of the Spirit of God at work in us.
Throughout Romans, Paul offers a defense of what he believes and teachers about the gospel for these believers in Rome he has not yet met. Some of them may have been questioning him, his message and how it relates to Judaism. Paul writes to explain at length the connection of Jesus, the gospel and defend it, in spite of the rejection of Jesus as the Jewish Messiah by many Jews.
