Peter continues his encouragement and exhortations for these believers who have been scattered abroad because of opposition. They have experienced hardship and suffering, and Peter now reminds them that this is to be expected. This is a hard truth for us in a Western world largely defined by comforts and a longing for ease. Peter begins with the reminder that suffering is an unfortunate reality in a fallen world. He also, once again, challenges these believers not to suffer because of sin or responding in a sinful manner. As suffering comes, believers can and must trust God. He is the faithful Creator that cares for them. He can and will take care of them and for you. We demonstrate our trust in his care, by faithfully living for him. Believers are again called, here by Peter, upright lives, lives defined by right and compassionate conduct toward others. By God's grace, we can faithfully live for him and trust him, even in hardship and suffering.

Peter writes to believers who have been scattered because of the opposition and persecution they are facing. These believers are now scattered across Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, Bithynia; which is modern day Turkey. Peter addresses throughout this epistle the appropriate response to suffering. Part of that response involves understanding our connection as believers to Jesus and the suffering that he endured on our behalf. We can follow the example of Jesus and endure suffering and the various hardships that may come into our lives. Peter writes to encourage these believers to endure because of the living hope that we have through Jesus. You can endure today, as you hope in Jesus.
