Choosing Sides!

March 20, 2022 Speaker: pastor dave Series: The Gospel according to Luke - Certainty for Believers

Topic: Jesus, Peter, Trial of Jesus, Luke, 1-AM Sermons Passage: Luke 22:54-71

Luke continues with the events of the night before Jesus is crucified, here he offers the account of his arrest and the final trial before the Jewish authorities. Peter follows the arrest party and Jesus back to the palace of Annas and Caiaphas. There he finds himself in the courtyard around the fire with the servants and likely some of the temple guard that arrested Jesus. Three times he's asked about his connection to Jesus and three times he denies.  His denial is complete, a denial of Jesus, his relationship with the other disciples and even his connection to Jesus in Galilee. After the rooster crows, Jesus turns and looks at Peter, who leaves and is overwhelmed by his sin as Luke moves him off the scene weeping.

The role of the chief priests, scribes and elders is far more sinister. They have decided the only way to deal with Jesus is to have him killed. Jesus is mocked, beaten and blasphemed and then in the morning condemned by the Sanhedrin - though, they are unable to actually put him to death.

As believers, our confidence is in Jesus and that despite our sinful failures; he, our hope and redeemer, offers grace for forgiveness and change. Jesus alone is our hope of forgiveness and transformation. May God give us grace to live it.

Luke writes to strengthen believers, to address misperceptions of unbelievers, while emphasizing the divine and perfect human aspects of Jesus’ life!  Jesus alone is the Lord and Redeemer of all humanity!  He offers us the assurance that God is at work, accomplishing his purposes, that Jesus is God incarnate and that true followers of Jesus are in reality the people of God, that the Holy Spirit is essential for our every response and action and that no matter who you are or where you’re from Jesus died to rescue you! Jesus is the fulfillment of all the promises of God and though every promise is not yet realized, we can be certain that one day they will be! Luke writes to give certainty and assurance to believers – you can be certain that everything about Jesus is true!
