Relationships characterize much of our lives. Unfortunately, as we regularly engage with others, we can come to points of disagree.  Differences of perspective or opinion can arise and when they do, how do we respond?  James has already addressed the issue of selfish ambition and jealous envying that so often characterizes human relationships. James understood this and he also was aware that there were conflicts among these believers who had been scattered because of their faith. James addresses these conflicts and calls these believers to understand that the means of receiving all they desired comes from prayer rather than quarreling with one another. James goes on to address the danger of pride and grace that comes through humbly engaging God. Genuine faith avoids proud quarrels, instead it humbly seeks for God’s grace!

James, the brother of Jesus, writes to Jewish believers who have been scattered, likely because of persecution. James encourages these believers through instruction on trials, genuine faith, and the appropriate interactions within the community of believers. His goal is to give guidance to these believers as they continue to engage with one another apart from the oversight of the established church in Jerusalem.
