James continues from his discussion on the tongue, to yet another application, the practical application of wisdom.  Wisdom is objective and measurable. The responses and interactions of others demonstrate the degree of wisdom that one possesses and uses in daily engagements with others. James contrasts earthly wisdom and heavenly or godly wisdom.  For believers, genuine faith avoids earthly wisdom and seeks to put on the wisdom of God! By God's grace, we can live daily responding with God's wisdom rather than the wisdom of our world.

James, the brother of Jesus, writes to Jewish believers who have been scattered, likely because of persecution. James encourages these believers through instruction on trials, genuine faith, and the appropriate interactions within the community of believers. His goal is to give guidance to these believers as they continue to engage with one another apart from the oversight of the established church in Jerusalem.
