Faith in Action

December 5, 2021 Speaker: pastor dave Series: Genuine Faith Responds - A Study of James

Topic: Loving One Another, Salvation, Genuine Faith Responds: A Study of James, 1-PM Sermons Passage: James 2:14-17

James 2:14-17 is classically viewed as a passage that pits works and faith against one another, but in reality, if we remember the context James is continuing his conversation about the way that we engage with one another.  Do we genuinely love one another more than we love ourselves? This is the Kingdom law (v. 8) that James refers to when he addresses not being partial.  This law of freedom (v.12) gives us the opportunity to genuinely love one another and this is the mark, this is the measure of our genuine faith. How do you treat others, in the church?  How do you treat other believers?  This is God's measure of genuine spirituality and this is a constant theme throughout the epistle of James.

James, the brother of Jesus, writes to Jewish believers who have been scattered, likely because of persecution. James encourages these believers through instruction on trials, genuine faith, and the appropriate interactions within the community of believers. His goal is to give guidance to these believers as they continue to engage with one another apart from the oversight of the established church in Jerusalem.
