Luke first describes the ministry of Jesus to children and the call to come into the Kingdom of God as a child.  This call speaks to the necessity of accepting the work and message of Jesus with a helpless dependence, realizing that we offer nothing and have nothing in and of ourselves to bring. Luke thens moves to the account of the rich, young ruler that comes and asks how he can have eternal life. Jesus addresses his real issue - a love of his wealth and ultimately a refusal to let it go.  Jesus then offers an astounding warning, a jarring reminder of the difficulty of coming to Jesus with a helpless dependence when you rest in your wealth. Jesus concludes with yet another reminder of the values of the kingdom as he prophecies of his coming death. The humility and sacrifice of Jesus again point to the priorities that characterize the kingdom. Throughout the passage, we can clearly see that the normal, honored and coveted values of humanity are turned upside down by Jesus. May God give us grace to increasingly value all that matters to him, above all that so often matters to us.

Luke writes to strengthen believers, to address misperceptions of unbelievers, while emphasizing the divine and perfect human aspects of Jesus’ life!  Jesus alone is the Lord and Redeemer of all humanity!  He offers us the assurance that God is at work, accomplishing his purposes, that Jesus is God incarnate and that true followers of Jesus are in reality the people of God, that the Holy Spirit is essential for our every response and action and that no matter who you are or where you’re from Jesus died to rescue you! Jesus is the fulfillment of all the promises of God and though every promise is not yet realized, we can be certain that one day they will be! Luke writes to give certainty and assurance to believers – you can be certain that everything about Jesus is true!
