James begins immediately by addressing the right response of the people of God to their trials. How do you respond to trials?  Do you have joy, even in hardship?  James instructs us to endure and to understand that endurance will produce strength for whatever else may come.  You can rest in the presence and faithfulness of God, even while facing trials.

James, the brother of Jesus, writes to Jewish believers who have been scattered, likely because of persecution. James encourages these believers through instruction on trials, genuine faith, and the appropriate interactions within the community of believers. His goal is to give guidance to these believers as they continue to engage with one another apart from the oversight of the established church in Jerusalem.
