Luke continues with the genealogy of Jesus, likely on his mother Mary's side.  He moves from there to the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness. We often look at the details of Scripture through our human and cultural lense; but if we look closely Jesus is combating the temptation to respond against God.  First, the temptation to doubt the provision, the plan and the protection of God.  Second, the temptation not to be loyal to God - to offer our loyalty to another, to others or other things. Third, the temptation to put God to the test - the test being will God protect or preserve.  Jesus responds with the Bible and teaches us as he quotes from Deuteronomy exactly how we ought to live genuinely loving God with our whole heart, mind and soul!  Ultimately, this is always the temptation for every single one of us - will we try to live independantly of God?  May God strengthen us to exalt him and magnify his glorious name by our responses to temptation.

Luke writes to strengthen believers, to address misperceptions of unbelievers, while emphasizing the divine and perfect human aspects of Jesus’ life!  Jesus alone is the Lord and Redeemer of all humanity!  He offers us the assurance that God is at work, accomplishing his purposes, that Jesus is God incarnate and that true followers of Jesus are in reality the people of God, that the Holy Spirit is essential for our every response and action and that no matter who you are or where you’re from Jesus died to rescue you! Jesus is the fulfillment of all the promises of God and though every promise is not yet realized, we can be certain that one day they will be! Luke writes to give certainty and assurance to believers – you can be certain that everything about Jesus is true!
