Great Mercy

December 13, 2020 Speaker: pastor dave Series: The Gospel according to Luke - Certainty for Believers

Topic: 1-AM Sermons, Luke, Advent, Mercy of God Passage: Luke 1:57–80

As Luke continues the birth account of John and Jesus, we come to the birth and naming of John.  Zechariah is still mute after his son's birth and Elizabeth chooses the name John when asked what the child's name will be.  The group of friends and neighbors question and Zechariah writes that his name should be John.  Overwhelmed by the agreement, seemingly without a lot of opportunity to communicate, the group acknowledges that God must have something special for this child, John.  Indeed he does! Zechariah goes on to declare the glorious working of God among his people and ultimately to the nations, but he describes this work as the mercy of God in verses 1:72, 78.  Our God is a God of Mercy.  He is ready and very willing to demonstrate mercy.

He showed mercy to Zechariah and Elizabeth personally and yet shows mercy to humanity through the birth of their son John - who would go on to be the voice in the wilderness making a way for the Messiah, Jesus.  What a glorious God of love and hope we serve!  This Advent season, hope in God - he is truly a God of Mercy.  Mercy has been poured out on humanity through Jesus, through his death, burial and resurrection for us.  Thank God for his mercy!

Luke writes to strengthen believers, to address misperceptions of unbelievers, while emphasizing the divine and perfect human aspects of Jesus’ life!  Jesus alone is the Lord and Redeemer of all humanity!  He offers us the assurance that God is at work, accomplishing his purposes, that Jesus is God incarnate and that true followers of Jesus are in reality the people of God, that the Holy Spirit is essential for our every response and action and that no matter who you are or where you’re from Jesus died to rescue you! Jesus is the fulfillment of all the promises of God and though every promise is not yet realized, we can be certain that one day they will be! Luke writes to give certainty and assurance to believers – you can be certain that everything about Jesus is true!
